Self-doubt

He stands outside the circle
Unwilling to step over the line
Looking at the broken pieces
Of what he must leave behind
Turning his back to that life
And slowly making his way
From the pieces he couldn't fix
Since he threw them all away
Soon coming upon a door
Open and welcoming
But he passes it by moving on
Certain he will never fit in
One meant to live alone
Having broken so long ago
Unable to step over the line
And becoming his only foe

I'd like to see more concrete details in this. "Looking at the broken pieces / of what he must leave behind." What are those broken pieces, exactly? Why must he leave them behind? Who is he?

The broken pieces are his family. He is stubborn, set in his ways, unwilling to compromise or realize that what he has does not have to be as good as it gets and that happiness can be his, but he has to be willing to find it and carry it within and if he wants to live with cynicism and a chip on his shoulder, he can't expect his family to have to hold umbrellas over their heads constantly in his presence. He is Anybody like I just described.
